I’m vise shopping. Now, I’m not looking for a $2k machinist’s vise, but I do want something that will be sturdy and last.

This is an area where I am not all that familiar of what’s out there in my budget range - all I really know of is Yost, because I’ve used them before. What do you guys recommend?

Try swap meets or estate sales. Look for a heavily used vise that is in good condition. If it has taken a lot of use and shrugged it off, it’ll take a lot more.

amazon surpisingly does free shipping on vices, worth buying there just for that.
i too shopped locally just to avoid shipping, until i found out amazon somehow can afford to ship a massive heavy chunk of metal for free

I have the one in the photo and it’s a piece of crap. The one I got my wife was $>100 and much better so look at the $200-300 range.

I’m also on the “go big go old” front. I’m told the early Wilton vises are some of the best out there. When you’re looking at old vises, scuffs and scratches are okay, even deeper gouges, so long as the jaws are square and straight, there’s not a ton of slop in any pivot points or in the screw (if you screw the jaws in or out and reverse direction, you don’t want to be spinning forever before the jaw starts moving)
